Netflix renewed Hellbound, the Korean fantasy thriller from Train to Busan director Yeon Sang-ho, for a second season back in 2022, and it looks set to be just as intense and hellish as the first instalment, if the latest trailer is anything to go by.

Based on a webtoon of the same name, the series is set in an alternate world where supernatural creatures appear out of the blue and tell humans the date and time of their death – before three gigantic monsters burst in from another dimension and incinerate that person on the spot.

Season 1 debuted on the platform in November 2021 and became an overnight success, outperforming Squid Game as the most-watched show.

The season 2 trailer picks up almost immediately after the events of season 1, with hundreds of people who were previously condemned to hell resurrected without explanation.

Yes, this means that Jung Jinsu (Kim Sung-cheol), the leader of The New Truth cult, is back.

The trailer also gives fans a glimpse at the return of Min Hye-jin (Kim Hyun-joo), as well as many other characters.

While we wait for more news on season 3, read on for all the details we have so far about the second season of Hellbound.

Hellbound season 2 is coming to Netflix on Friday 25th October 2024.

In 2021, it was announced that a second season would only materialise following the release of a sequel to the original webtoon.

“My partner Choi Kyu-Seok and I have decided that the story afterwards will be told first through the webtoon,” creator Yeon Sang-ho told Variety at the time.

However, in September 2022, Netflix officially confirmed that the show would be returning for season 2, despite no further instalments of the webtoon version of the series having been released.

The announcement was made during Netflix's global fan event TUDUM, with a short video teasing that "Hellbound will return for season 2".

The eerie clip also features some pretty disturbing imagery – including a skeleton in a glass box – and you can watch it in full below:

Hellbound season 2 cast

The first season of Hellbound unfolded from the perspective of several different characters, some of whom didn't make it to the series finale alive.

Season 2 will see Kim Hyun-joo reprise her role as lawyer-turned-badass Min Hye-jin, who proved herself to be a true force of nature in the final chapter.

Netflix has also confirmed that we'll see more from Yang Ik-june as police detective Jin Kyung-hoon, who was a main character in the first three episodes of the series but disappeared halfway through, leaving his fate uncertain.

Kim Shin-rok will also reappear as Park Jeong-ja, who made a shock return at the tail-end of the finale, after being brutally murdered and banished to hell live on camera for all to see.

Her unexplained resurrection begs a lot of questions (read on for more on that).

The full cast list for season 2 is as follows:

A trailer for Hellbound season 2 was previously unveiled, revealing that Chairman Jung Jinsu, leader of The New Truth cult, has returned from hell after being trapped there for several years.

Upon his return, he discovers the dicta of New Truth and its extremist faction, the Arrowhead, now rule society.

However, as Jinsu comes to realise that he isn’t the only one who’s been resurrected which leads him to question the cult’s teachings: is being brought back to life really damnation, as the New Truth claims, or could it be the path to true salvation?
